correlation between intracranial and intraocular pressures

چکیده
purpose: to evaluated the correlation between intracranial pressure (icp) and intraocular pressure (iop). methods: this interventional case series included 90 patients undergoing lumbar puncture (lp) for neurologist evaluation. iop was measured before and 1 hour after the lp by using goldmann tono-meter. patients were compared into two groups: patients with normal icp (<20 cmh2o) and patients with high icp (≥20 cmh2o). results: patients included 29 male and 61 female subjects with mean age of 32.9±11.4 (range 13-62) years. thirty-three patients had normal icp and 57 patients had high icp. there was a significant correlation between icp and iop such that 71.9% of the high icp group had high iop (>21 mmhg) and 28.1% of them had normal iop (p<0.001). significant decrease in iop occurred after lp in the high icp group (p< 0.001). conclusions: it seems that there is a significant correlation between iop and icp.

No correlation between intraocular pressure and intracranial pressure.
A recent study has reported an excellent correlation between intraocular pressure (IOP) and intracranial pressure (ICP), suggesting that measurement of IOP may serve as a noninvasive means to determine ICP. To reexamine the relation between IOP and ICP, we reviewed the medical records of all patients who underwent lumbar puncture between 1991 and 2007 in the neuro-ophthalmology clinic at the Un...
متن کاملThe relation between intracranial and intraocular pressures: study of 50 patients.
OBJECTIVE We evaluated the correlation between intracranial (ICP) and intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS Of the 77 patients who underwent a lumbar puncture, 27 were excluded secondary to a history of glaucoma, using drugs effective on IOP, and abnormal funduscopic examination. ICP was measured by lumbar puncture. IOP was measured by two scales of Schiotz tonometer in both eyes, and the mean ...
متن کاملPoor correlation between intracranial pressure and intraocular pressure by hand-held tonometry
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to provide data on the controversial issue of whether handheld measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP) are capable of accurately predicting elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients undergoing lumbar puncture (LP). METHODS All patients over the age of 18 years who underwent an LP in the emergency or neurological departments at the Tel Aviv Medical Ce...
متن کاملIn-vivo effects of intraocular and intracranial pressures on the lamina cribrosa microstructure
There is increasing clinical evidence that the eye is not only affected by intraocular pressure (IOP), but also by intracranial pressure (ICP). Both pressures meet at the optic nerve head of the eye, specifically the lamina cribrosa (LC). The LC is a collagenous meshwork through which all retinal ganglion cell axons pass on their way to the brain. Distortion of the LC causes a biological cascad...
متن کاملMapping in-vivo optic nerve head strains caused by intraocular and intracranial pressures.
Although it is well documented that abnormal levels of either intraocular (IOP) or intracranial pressure (ICP) can lead to potentially blinding conditions, such as glaucoma and papilledema, little is known about how the pressures actually affect the eye. Even less is known about potential interplay between their effects, namely how the level of one pressure might alter the effects of the other....
متن کاملDynamics of cerebral venous and intracranial pressures.
Traumatic brain injury and stroke are both characterized by an ischemic core surrounded by a penumbra of low to hyperemic flows. The underperfused ischemic core is the focus of edema development, but the source of the edema fluid is not known. We hypothesized that flow of edema fluid into the tissue is derived from cerebral venous circulation pressure, which always exceeds intracranial pressure...
